Hermine Santrouschitz Gies was born in Vienna Austria-Hungry.She along with her husband Jan Gies helped hide the Otto Frank family from the Nazis in Amsterdam during WWII. After the Franks were arrested, Gies discovered the now-famous diary of their youngest daughter, Anne. After the war, she returned the diary to Anne’s father, who had it published in 1947.
