I am always on the lookout for WWII resources of any kind…books, personal stories, news articles, music and unusual memorabilia. What’s interesting and exciting is that I keep finding things in the most unlikely places. Take for example my current find, The Unbreakable Code, a children’s book written by Sara Hoagland Hunter and beautifully illustrated by Julie Miner. Would you believe I found it at a garage sale in Phoenix? It was the last place we stopped on the way home, and it was challenging to get there on the rough, narrow desert road. But after parking the car, I started looking around and the first thing that caught my eye was a box of books. Quickly flipping through the strange assortment, I saw the title, The Unbreakable Code, and knew immediately it was about the Navajo Code Talkers. I was eager to read this book, learn more about the back story and add it to my growing collection of WWII resources. I gratefully paid a dollar for the book and headed home. I had indeed found my treasure for the day, an unexpected reminder about my Navajo neighbors in Northern Arizona and their very important role in WWII.
